Upgrade: HomeLink and rolling-code gates — working options

Why HomeLink doesn't trigger modern rolling-code gates and how to fix it: external universal receiver, Wi-Fi gateways (MyQ and similar), wired control input.

Why it doesn't work

Many modern gate openers use a rolling code and/or frequencies/protocols that are not fully compatible with your version of HomeLink (different markets/frequencies 315/390/433/868 MHz). The car "learns" but the opener doesn't accept the command.

Solution options

  1. External universal receiver (for your region/frequency), wired into the gate opener's "button" terminals.
    • We program HomeLink to this receiver, which already correctly "closes" the control input.
    • Cost: $30–120. Look for compatible models from Chamberlain/LiftMaster, Nice, Hörmann etc.
  2. Wi-Fi gateway/cloud (for example MyQ, Shelly, Meross).
    • Gate control from the phone / automation, with HomeLink kept as a backup. Direct compatibility with Tesla varies — usually use App/Shortcuts instead.
    • Cost: $20–100.
  3. Wired control input — run the button to a convenient location (or a "dry contact" from a smart-home relay).
    • The most compatible option, but without the "wireless magic".

Notes by market

  • Make sure the device is for your region/frequency (EU: 433/868 MHz; US: 315/390 MHz).
  • On Model 3/Y, HomeLink is an option (recent years) — you need a module with installation.

Cost

$20–200 depending on the option chosen (receiver/gateway/installation).
