Model 3/Y: door check strap clicking — how to fix
Summary
On Model 3/Y a click/crunch can develop over time when opening or closing the door. The most common cause is the door check strap: dirt/dust got in, the grease dried out, or the plastic/friction inserts began to wear. In the early stage the unit can be revived by cleaning and lubrication; with persistent crunching or play the unit is replaced.
Symptoms
- 1–3 dry "clicks" at the same point in the door's travel.
- A "step" feeling as the door moves forward/backward.
- More pronounced in the cold.
Why it happens
Inside the check strap is a friction mechanism that holds the door in its detents. Dust/moisture/salt wash out the lubricant → binding and clicks appear. Over time the plastic/rubber elements wear down — at that point lubricant only helps briefly and replacement is required.
What to do step by step
- Diagnosis: localize the sound; you do not need to remove the door card — it is enough to watch the check strap in the door opening.
- Free: carefully wash the unit with clean alcohol/brake cleaner (not on the paint!), and after it dries apply a thin layer of silicone/teflon lubricant. Do not use thick, dust-collecting greases. There is no need to disassemble the door. Take a 13 mm wrench, loosen the nut that holds the check strap. Push the check strap down with force and tighten the nut in that position. Done. The check strap no longer clicks.
- If it didn't help: replace the door check strap per the manual (see links below). The job is basic: undo the fasteners from the door opening and from the door card side, remove the unit, install the new one. Torque specs: the nuts on the door side — 10 N·m (10 mm socket), the bolt to the A-pillar — 24 N·m (13 mm socket) (see manual).
Note on parts: for Model 3/Y there are different part numbers for check straps depending on side/year (e.g. 1089507‑00‑D, 1110298‑00‑D, etc.). Verify the PN by VIN in the catalogs before ordering.
What it costs in Belarus
- $0 — cleaning/lubrication (DIY).
- $80–200 — check strap replacement (part + labor), depending on market/availability of used parts.
On which cars it applies
- Model 3 / Model Y, all regions (US/EU/CN), build years 2017+ (pre-refresh and refresh). Drivetrain/battery capacity does not matter.
Useful to know
- Don't "force" the door if the unit is binding — you can damage the hinges/door card.
- After winter washes, blow out the door opening and wipe the check strap dry — this extends its service life.
