Model 3/Y refresh 2021: heat pump issues (sensors/PT-sensors, software)
On the 2021 refresh there were widespread failures in heavy frost. Software updates and service campaigns (PT-sensor replacement) improved the situation.
Symptoms
- No heat in frost, HVAC errors. On early batches — increased component wear due to coolant shortage.
What was done
- Software updates (closing "stuck" valve positions).
- Service bulletins for replacement of three PT-sensors of the heat pump.
- For mechanical damage — replacement of components (supermanifold/octovalve, etc.).
Belarus budget
≈ $900–2 000 depending on the scope of replacement.

Additional fixes from chat:
- First check the refrigerant level — often the issue is solved by a simple top-up (e.g. near ЭлектроЭра in Minsk).
- For Denso compressors: in the config you can lower the rpm from 11,000 to 8,000 — Tesla itself fixed this in software in later firmware.
- R1234yf refrigerant can be replaced with R134a — they are interchangeable, R134a is significantly cheaper. A full replacement with vacuum is required.
- Worst case — compressor replacement. A new one from a 2023–2024 car costs $800–900, you can sell your old one for $500–600.
- Smell from the AC is a separate issue: replace cabin filters + ozonate the cabin.
