Regenerative braking on icy roads in winter

Regenerative braking on slippery surfaces can lead to skidding. How to set up braking for safe winter driving.

Description of the problem

In winter, regenerative braking can play a nasty trick on slippery surfaces — the car decelerates sharply when you lift off the throttle, which can lead to a skid. Beginners panic; experienced drivers know how to handle it.

Solution

  1. On older software versions you can lower the regen level in the menu.
  2. On newer firmware, regen is automatically limited when the battery is cold — this is standard behavior.
  3. Don't release the pedal completely — keep it "feathered", smoothly lift off.
  4. A no-regen mode (Creep/Roll) is available in the menu on some software versions.
  5. The car is smart enough not to let regen lock the wheels.
