The “Ukrainian scheme” for restoring Tesla certificates: what it is and why it is risky
Contents
The “Ukrainian scheme” restores Tesla certificates through Tesla support with a cover story that the car is in Ukraine. The certificates do get restored, but the car lands on a Tesla blacklist: software updates are blocked, maps roll back to the European EU-2019.20, and if the certificates expire again, restoring them is close to impossible. How to spot the scheme before paying, what to ask the operator and what the alternatives are.

If you are from Ukraine or your car is in Ukraine, this article does not apply to you. For Ukrainian citizens and cars located in Ukraine, restoring certificates through Tesla support is a legal way to get the certificates back and have working navigation. This article is about something else: the same procedure used for a car that is not actually in Ukraine (for example, one in Belarus).
In short. This scheme does restore the certificates, but the car lands on a Tesla blacklist. Software updates get blocked, maps roll back to the 2019 European release and never update again, and if the certificates expire again, restoring them is close to impossible. Always ask about the method before you pay. If the car is going to be passed off as Ukrainian, walk away.
Tesla certificates are the cryptographic keys the car uses to sign its communication with Tesla's servers: without them it disappears from the app and stops receiving updates. Tesla certificates are restored by different methods, and the method decides what happens to the car afterwards. What certificates are, how to check their status and how the three restoration methods differ is covered in the main guide to Tesla certificates. The certificate calculator estimates from the build date when your car's certificates expire. This article covers only one method, the one that gets the car blacklisted.
Why schemes like this exist at all
Officially, Tesla will not restore certificates in Belarus (#491466), so everything offered locally is a workaround (#406646). Every option carries some risk (see “Alternatives”), but the “Ukrainian” scheme has the worst consequences, and they have already been confirmed on real cars (#507263).
How the scheme works
The operator contacts Tesla support and claims that the car is in Ukraine (#507130). The certificates get restored, but the car is put on a separate list that is handled manually (#507266). When Tesla sees that the car is not actually in Ukraine, restrictions are applied to it (#507258).
A similar variant is done remotely “via Romania/Bucharest”: according to our information, only cars registered as being in Ukraine are restored this way.
Consequences
Based on checks of cars after this scheme and on what owners report:
- Flags in Tesla's system:
Ukraine List ManuallyandSoftware update – Blocked(#507263, #507266). - Maps roll back to the European
EU-2019.20(#507100). If you install fresh ones, they roll back again after a short while (#507104). - Software updates: for some owners the first 2–3 updates still arrive, then they stop (#507258, #507266).
- Removing the flag is, as far as is known, impossible (#507258): the car is assigned to a Ukrainian service centre that exists only online. There is nowhere to go to get the car taken off the list.
- If the certificates expire again, the chances of restoring them are close to zero (#507258).
A real case
In September 2026 a Model S owner had the certificates restored in Belarus for $1300 using the Ukrainian scheme. According to the owner, nobody warned him about the consequences. The maps then rolled back to EU-2019.20, and after an attempt to install fresh ones they rolled back to the same version again.
The certificates are restored, so formally the job is done. But the car got restrictions that, as far as is known, can no longer be lifted.
How to spot it in advance
- The operator does not name the method or answers in general terms: “officially”, “through support”, “it’s a secret”.
- Promises an “official restoration” in Belarus. Tesla does not do that here officially (#491466).
- Mentions Ukraine, a “Ukrainian” account or service centre, or remote work “via Romania/Bucharest” (#491449).
What to ask before paying
- Which method will you use? Will the car be registered as being in another country?
- What will happen to software updates and maps after the restoration?
- Do you have cars restored with this method 2+ months ago that still receive updates? Show a screenshot of the software version and the date of the last update.
- What will you do if the certificates expire again or the car gets blocked: redo the work, refund the money?
If it has already been done to your car
- Check the map version and whether software updates are arriving.
- Do not pay upfront to anyone who promises to “remove the blacklist”: as far as is known, that is impossible. If someone still takes it on, pay only after the result.
- Share your case in the main chat, TESLA owner's group BELARUS: it helps warn others.
Who works with this scheme (according to our information)
- @kkorolevM (Mikhail): according to the operator himself; marked ⚠️ in the pinned general announcement of the Тесла Барахолка Беларусь chat (the Belarusian Tesla flea market).
- tesla-cert.by (on Telegram: “Серт Тэсла Минск”): a client case, September to October 2026.
The list grows as cases are confirmed. If you are on it by mistake or have changed your method, write to the chat admin and we will check and correct it.
Alternatives
- The American channel. Tesla can shut the channel down, and then prices go up (they have reached $3000) (#494125, #385286, #507584). But after channel closures there were no certificate revocations and no blacklisting.
- The Romanian Tesla service centre, in person. The most above-board option: the car goes to the official service centre, and payment is made in your own Tesla app. You need a middleman to get a booking (#256587).
- Verified operators and their methods are listed in the pinned general announcement in the Тесла Барахолка Беларусь chat.
Restoration methods, prices and timelines are covered in detail in the main guide to Tesla certificates.

Tesla connectivity certificates live for 2 years and renew themselves roughly 100 days before the end, provided the car was online; Wi-Fi is not needed for that. How to check in a minute, why the Autopilot certificates are looked at separately, what restoration costs in Belarus as of September 2026 (usually $1000 to $1500 against $3000 a year ago), how the three restoration methods differ and why the “Ukrainian” scheme puts a lifetime software update blacklist on the VIN.
Chinese-market, US-market or EU-market Tesla: what's the difference (2026)
How Teslas built for the Chinese, US and European markets differ when you drive them in Belarus: charging and ports, maps and clock, the app, Superchargers, warranty, lighting, prices and resale. A summary table and a point-by-point review of that 16-item list.
Firmware and forced updates over SIM
The update notification arrives over the built-in SIM, but the firmware package itself downloads only over Wi-Fi. What pulling the SIM actually achieves, why updates hang for months and what it takes to unstick them.
Tesla Premium Connectivity in Belarus: what it is and how to activate it in 2026
As of October 2026 there is no free Premium Connectivity left: on 30.09.2026 Tesla shut down the “forever” Latvian subscription, and since early September Tesla demands a vehicle registration certificate and a driver's license every single time a car is linked to an account. The only working route is a paid subscription through a region where Tesla sells: Canada 13.99 CAD/mo, USA $9.99, Poland 35 zł, EU and Latvia €9.99. In October 2026 the chat described a working scheme for moving a car to the Polish region with genuine Belarusian documents: 5 of 5 cars passed Tesla's manual review. Payments from Belarus go through BSB cards.
