Can I just install a used salvage-yard module on a Tesla?
Physically — yes; working — it won't. All Tesla ECUs are paired to the VIN of a specific car: without the pairing procedure the onboard system doesn't recognize the module, multiple errors pile up, and functions get restricted all the way to the car refusing to drive. A used module is first unpaired from its previous car and its memory wiped, then paired to your VIN.

What happens if I drive with an unpaired module?

Why is calibration needed on top of the pairing?
Pairing is the module's authorization on the network and loading the configuration for the car's spec. After it, the module has to be reconciled with the rest of the modules: sensor calibrations, initialization, error checks and a test drive. Without this stage even a paired module can work incorrectly.
